Handmade Industrials is an autonomous design studio, known for their innovative ways of merging industry and craft. By introducing human intervention in de-humanized industrial processes, Marlies and Rutger create a wide range of unique handmade objects in their ateliers in The Hague, NL.

An object is the product of its materials and fabrication method; they are a reflection and cypher of the culture that produced them. Our interest lies in discovering and revealing the significance of the materials and processes we devise and work with. Respecting the integrity of the relationship between material, process and product results in objects that are both organic and manufactured.

Derived from the their process based design practice and the necessity to bring back the human element in the production process, they elevate anonymous industrial materials into individual objects with their own identity and character.

Their objects ‘while residing in multiple museum collections’ are made to be used and come to life when interacted with. Their hands-on approach and self-developed production processes enables them to create customized and site specific objects. This creates vast opportunities for clients who need unique, custom or one-off furniture that can be used as interior site specific work or props and in specific spaces or for special occasions.
